QUOTE: Toilet Activism and ‘Chest Reconstruction Surgery’—Sponsored by HRC and PFLAG 3/19/2003

The following are some of the workshops featured at the recent “True Spirit Conference 2003,” sponsored in part by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s leading homosexual lobby group. Every year, the True Spirit conference attracts “female-to-male” “transmen,” women—many of them college-aged—who seek to become like men because they believe their body does not fit their “gender.” (Some go so far as to have their healthy breasts surgically removed in their quest to appear masculine; see session descriptions below.)

The theme for this year’s conference, held February 14-17 in Washington, D.C., was “Masculinity: The Magical Mystery Tour.” HRC gave $250 to support the event, evidence of HRC’s growing “trans” advocacy. Other sponsors included: GenderPac, a “transgender” activist group; PFLAG (Parents, Friends, and Family of Lesbians and Gays)/Trans Coalition; the Metropolitan Community Church of Northern Virginia, a church for homosexuals, based outside D.C.; and the National Latina/o Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organization. Toilet Training: Advocating for Trans-Accessible Bathrooms

Tired of holding it? Sick of getting kicked out of bathrooms, harassed, laughed at, or arrested for trying to relieve yourself? Come give feedback of a rough cut of "Toilet Trained" a training video addressing the problems with gender-segregated bathrooms and learn about the strategies being developed for de-gendering bathrooms at our jobs, schools, in non-profits, and in public places. Share your strategies. We'll have an in-depth discussion of the problems with gender-segregated bathrooms and the strategies being used by activists across the country to make accessible, all-gender bathrooms available to all of us.

This popular session will invite guys to come to the front of the room and briefly share highlights of their surgery experience and/or reflect on their relationship to their new chest. Discussion will include choosing a surgeon, logistics and emotions of preparing for surgery, partners/support network role and other related issues.
