Portland, Oregon, Mayor Proclaims ‘Leather Pride Week’ for Sexual Sadists 9/11/2002 Portland, Oregon, Mayor Proclaims ‘Leather Pride Week’ for Sexual Sadists By Peter LaBarbera [WARNING: graphic descriptions] Vera Katz, the mayor of Portland, Oregon, last month issued a formal proclamation declaring “Leather Pride Week” — coinciding with an event held by sexual sadists that included sadistic sex orgies and an event celebrating “fisting,” C&F Report has learned. A spokeswoman for Katz reached by C&F Report defended the “leather” proclamation and said it was not intended to promote “fisting,” a sadistic perversion practiced mainly by “gay” men in which one man inserts his hand and arm deep inside another man’s behind. “Mayor Katz’s Leather Pride Proclamation promotes sexual violence and is a reproach and an embarrassment to the people of Oregon,” said Suzanne Brownlow, State Director of Concerned Women for America of Oregon. CWA President Sandy Rios said, “Whereas ‘your honors’ of old have paid tribute to visitors with keys to the city, perhaps Mayor Katz can now present keys to the city's fur-lined hand-cuffs and bondage chamber. It’s amazing to behold how — in the name of ‘diversity’—committed liberals can’t say no to any perversion, yet we’re supposed to somehow believe they will still draw the line at sex between adults and children.” Mayor Katz’s proclamation, which was obtained through a sadistic-oriented e-mail list and was not posted on her official Web site, states: Whereas, The City Of Portland recognizes the importance of a diverse community; and Leather Pride Week in Portland, and commend the many local non-profit organizations for their work in ongoing education, fundraising and leadership, and urge our citizens to appreciate the diversity and sense of an inclusive community represented by these groups and their efforts. THE ORIGIN OF THE ‘HANKY CODE’ “Red hanky” refers to the “hanky code” used by homosexual men in big cities to alert potential partners to the sexual acts (perversions) that they favor. A “gay”-oriented Web site produced by a man who calls himself “CountryHam,” describes the “hanky code” as “a system widely used by gay males to advertise what their [sexual] interests are, or what they are looking for. You wear a colored hanky in your back pocket. The color and placement of the hanky signifies your interest.” A red hanky worn in a man’s left pocket means that he likes to be the “fister” (use his arm in the act). A red hanky worn in the right pocket designates a man as the “fistee,” according to the code. The bizarre and dangerous “fisting” act is described in the book And the Band Played On by (now deceased) homosexual journalist Randy Shilts. The “gay” CountryHam Web site describes the origins of the “hanky code” as follows: It all started back in the early 70’s with an article in the Village Voice. The Village Voice is an alternative paper that has been published in New York’s Greenwich Village since 1955. They published a story saying that gays in the bars in the village would have an easier time picking each other up if there were a better system than keys left and right. They suggested going to the surplus store at Christopher and Washington and buying the Levi bandanas. There were only a few colors suggested: red, navy, light blue, green, black; because that was all there was for sale in that store at the time. The article was meant as a joke, but the community took it to heart. Shortly after that bandanas started to appear in back pockets all over the Village. Over time, more colors were added and use of the “hanky code” spread beyond New York. When asked if she knew what “fisting” was, Mayor Katz spokeswoman Sarah Bott said she did, but, “I don’t think that’s what the mayor was talking about when she issued the proclamation.” Bott said the activities practiced by the “leather pride week” participants are “their personal business.” Asked if the mayor, an ardent “gay rights” backer, is afraid of being associated publicly with such extreme practices as “fisting” and sadistic sex orgies, Bott said, “I don’t believe she is, no.” Bott then said that since the mayor was busy with September 11 commemoration activities, she (Bott) did not have time for a “prolonged discussion about Leather Pride Week.” ORGIES AND KINK Translating the lexicon of sexual sadists, “play parties” are orgies in which participants engage in public perversions such as (consensual) whippings, “fisting,” “torture” scenes and willing degradation as others look on. Sadistic “play parties” are often held in a host’s basement, which is called a “dungeon” and is outfitted with numerous pain-enhancing devices such as St. Andrew’s crosses and “bondage” chambers. PROMOTING SEXUAL VIOLENCE At least one major homosexual group, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, now promotes rights for sadistic sex advocates. The Task Force works closely with the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom — a D.C.-based group that defends sadomasochists, wife-swappers, pornographers, sex businesses, “polyamorists,” (advocates of multiple-partner sexual relationships) and others on the fringe of the sexual fringe. The Task Force is holding its annual “Creating Change” conference for grassroots homosexual activists in Portland in November. Reacting to the “Leather Pride Week” proclamation, CWA of Oregon’s Brownlow said, “Sado-masochist sex? Is there any sexual behavior that Mayor Katz does not want to exalt? What’s next, pedophilia? She has taken her appreciation for ‘alternate lifestyles’ too far. Shame on Mayor Vera Katz for promoting violence!” Brownlow said honoring people who use violence against each other for thrills is “corruptive to our communities and our state, and teaches children that any perversion is OK.” |
